How to approach Anxiety.

thoughtful looking lady

There is a strong belief that anxiety once experienced becomes a lifelong problem. I think that the reasons for this have to do with misbelief and the way it is approached.

I don’t come accross many people who have been in therapy who report that they are cured of their anxiety, only people who are ‘coping’ with their anxiety. They may report that it’s much better than it was before and they are happy to live with it at its current level. The only problem is if they are faced with adversity it ramps back up to where it was before or even worse.

Usually something happens to someone that triggers anxiety. They try ignoring it until it gets bad enough to warrant a visit to their GP. Their doctor prescribes antidepressants to deal with the symptoms so that they can cope with the feelings. The problem is that antidepressants help less than half the people who take them and a large proportion of those who feel better is due to placebo rather than the chemicals.

The next port of call is usually Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or counselling. These therapies can be effective for some but for others not so. The problem being is that anxiety is maintained within the subconscious, feeling mind not the conscious, rational mind. Talking about it gives little relief and most of the good suggestions are negated by the inner mind, hence the difficulty taking advice.

If neither of the above work you are left on medication with nasty side effects or existing, hamstrung with frightening feelings and unable to enjoy life.

In my mind the best way to deal with an anxiety problem is to find out what caused it and why is it being maintained! The feeling of anxiety is the mind preparing its defence against an actual threat or a perceived threat. In nearly all cases the threat is a ‘perceived’ one not an actual one so its not real or needed!

The only way to directly contact the subconscious mind is using hypnosis. Hypnosis utilises the natural trance states we regularly drop into. When a person is in trance there is potential to find the cause of a persons anxiety using their feelings as a guide.
